Every American should be paying attention to the health of their heart, particularly to the health of the arteries in their heart. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans, including women. Overall, about 480,000 American women die of heart disease each year, which is 60,000 more women then men.

Women are very concerned about breast cancer and whether or not they should take hormones. What most women don’t realize is that they have a much higher risk of dying from heart disease than dying from breast cancer.

Heart disease is different for women and men. Women need to focus more on the health of their small arteries, whereas men with heart disease often have blockage of their larger arteries.

The prevention and treatment of problems in the small versus large arteries are different. The larger and smaller arteries respond very differently to exercise and nutrition.

Exercise can lead to great improvement in the health and elasticity of the large arteries. The smaller arteries don’t respond that well to exercise. Stiffness in the small arteries is better treated with nutrients and/or medication.

How do you know if you are at risk? Does cholesterol really matter?

More than half the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol. You do need to concern yourself with abnormally high or low cholesterol, but normal cholesterol levels do not protect you from heart attacks.

A cholesterol check is not the best test for determining whether or not you are at risk for coronary artery disease.

In fact, the American Heart Association now agrees that people with heart disease all have one factor in common, and it isn’t high cholesterol. It’s inflammation in their arteries (Heart guidelines urge test for inflammation; USA TODAY, Jan. 28, 2003).

A great book to read on the topic is, The Great Cholesterol Con, by Malcom Kendrick.

The two tests that I recommend are the C-reactive protein blood test and the Cardiovascular Profile. The C-reactive protein test is a standard test that can be ordered by your doctor. It will tell you if your arteries are inflamed. This is a much better indicator in knowing if you are at risk for heart disease.

The other test I like is the Cardiovascular Profile test. I introduced this test into my practice a few years ago, and I am really impressed with it. It is on the cutting edge of cardiovascular health. The computer analysis of our arteries can discern whether the arteries are stiff or elastic. It also tells us whether the problems lie mostly with the larger arteries or with the smaller arteries.

In fact, the American Heart Association now agrees that people with heart disease all have one common factor which is not high cholesterol. It’s inflammation in their arteries (Heart guidelines urge test for inflammation; USA TODAY, Jan. 28, 2003).

If cholesterol is not the best indicator for heart disease, then what should you do?

In other articles I talk about the C-reactive protein test – an excellent indicator of heart disease that identifies inflamed arteries. I also really like the Cardiovascular Profile test.

I introduced this test into my practice a few years ago, and I am really impressed with it. It is on the cutting edge of cardiovascular health.

A pressure transducer is placed over the artery in your wrist (the radial artery), and the pressure of each pulse is measured. The computer attached to the pressure transducer analyzes the shape of each pulse. The computer analysis can discern whether the arteries are stiff or elastic.

We want our arteries to be elastic and not stiff.

This test also tells us whether the problems lie mostly with the larger arteries or with the smaller arteries. The larger and smaller arteries respond very differently to exercise and nutrition.

Most women have problems with their smaller arteries (called micro-vascular syndrome), not their larger ones. This is one of the reasons that heart disease is so different in women and men.

Men tend to have blockage in one or more of the main five arteries of the heart. With women, it’s the smaller branches of these arteries that become blocked and clogged.

The results of a Cardiovascular Profile will give you two numbers, one for your large arteries and one for your small arteries. If either the large or small arteries appear to be stiff, then you should take steps to improve the condition of your arteries with nutrition and diet.

The great thing about the Cardiovascular Profile is that it can guide you in effectively using the amazing amino acid L-arginine. At the proper dosage, L-arginine will increase nitric oxide and cause your arteries to relax.

Both blood pressure and the elasticity of your arteries can improve significantly by including L-arginine in your supplement program.

Exercise can lead to great improvement in the health and elasticity of the large arteries. The smaller arteries don’t respond that well to exercise. Stiffness in the small arteries can be improved with nutrients and/or medication.

If you are going to take the risk of being on a medication, you should monitor your progress with the Cardiovascular Profile so that you can at least tell whether or not your arteries are benefiting from the medication.

Some medications used for high blood pressure do improve the elasticity of the arteries, and others don’t.

A cutting edge test that I introduced in my practice a few years ago is the Cardiovascular Profile. The computer analysis can tell you whether your arteries are stiff or elastic. This test also tells us whether the problems lie mostly with the larger arteries or with the smaller arteries.

Exercise can lead to great improvement in the health and elasticity of the large arteries. The smaller arteries don’t respond that well to exercise. Stiffness in the small arteries can be improved with nutrients and/or medication.

The amazing amino acid L-arginine – at the proper dosage- will increase nitric oxide and cause your arteries to relax. Both blood pressure and the elasticity of your arteries can improve significantly by including L-arginine in your supplement program.

The great thing about the Cardiovascular Profile is that it can guide you in effectively using prevention, because you can monitor your progress of exercise, nutrition and medications.

If the elasticity of your arteries doesn’t improve with nutrition and exercise, you may need to take a medication. Consult with your health care professional.

Ace inhibitors, which include drugs like Enalapril and Capapril, may improve the elasticity of the arteries. Drugs such as Drovan, that are called ARBS (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers) may also improve the elasticity of the arteries.

Both the ace inhibitors and the ARBS will be much more effective when combined with proper nutrients:

4-6 gm of fish oil a day,

4-5 gm of L-arginine a day,

a variety of antioxidants including Co Q10,

as well as a new class of enzymes (Nattokinase and lumbrokinase) that appear to be very helpful for people at risk for coronary artery disease because they break down fibrin.

Phosphatidylcholine also improves the health of our arteries, but unfortunately high potency phosphatidylcholine is quite expensive.

If you are going to take the risk of being on a medication, you should monitor your progress with the Cardiovascular Profile so that you can at least tell whether or not your arteries are benefiting from the medication.

Some medications used for high blood pressure do improve the elasticity of the arteries, and others don’t.

Heart Diseases – How can we prevent them?

Inroduction

The heart has long been associated with the very nature of humanity. As long ago as the fourth century BC, Aristotle considered it to be the seat of the soul, the centre of nutrition and the vital source of heat. The very word ‘heart’ is still deeply embedded in our language in phrases such as ‘heart-felt sympathy’, ‘heart-to-heart talk’, or ‘the heart and soul of the party’, no doubt reflecting its central location in the body and its regular beat. It is also associated with many emotional sensations, so heart disorders hit at the very core of a person’s fabric and psyche.

Causes Of Heart Disease :
For almost forty years, the lipid hypothesis or diet-heart idea has dominated medical thinking about heart disease. In broad outlines, this theory proposes that when we eat foods rich in saturated fat and cholesterol, cholesterol is then deposited in our arteries in the form of plaque or thermos that cause blockages. If the blockages become severe, or if a clot forms that cannot get past the plaque, the heart is starved of blood and a heart attack occurs.

Many distinguished scientists have pointed to serious flaws in this theory, beginning with the fact that heart disease in America has increased during the period when consumption of saturated fat has decreased. “The diet-heart idea,” said the distinguished George Mann, “is the greatest scam in the history of medicine.” And the chorus of dissidents continues to grow, even as this increasingly untenable theory has been applied to the whole population, starting with low fat diets for growing children and mass medication with cholesterol-lowering drugs for adults.

But if it isn’t cholesterol, what causes heart disease? We don’t know enough to say for sure but we do have many clues; and although these clues present a complicated picture, it is not beyond the abilities of dedicated scientists to unravel them. Nor is the picture so complex that the consumer cannot make reasonable life-style adjustments to improve his chances.

•Pain worsens on exercise

Treatments for Heart Disease

There is a wide range of effective drug treatments for people with heart disease. These drugs can help lower blood pressure or cholesterol, prevent or dissolve blood clots, relieve and prevent angina symptoms or improve the strength or rhythm of the heart’s contractions.

Medical procedures to diagnose and treat heart disease include coronary angiography, coronary artery bypass grafts, coronary angioplasty, coronary stinting, heart transplants, operations for congenital defects, surgery for heart valve defects, electrophysiological treatments and implanting of cardiac defibrillator.

How can I avoid having a heart attack?

Talk to your family doctor about your specific risk factors (see box above) for a heart attack and how to reduce your risk. Your doctor may tell you to do the following:

•Quit smoking. Your doctor can help you. (If you don’t smoke, don’t start!)
•Eat a healthy diet. Cut back on foods high in saturated fat and sodium (salt) to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Ask your doctor about how to start eating a healthy diet.

Lose weight if you’re overweight
Control your blood pressure if you have hypertension.
