And why not? How else are you going to know how your company and your product stack up against your competition? You must check out every aspect of your competition’s operation and then objectively compare it with your own.

A prim and proper traditional marketer refers to this as “market research” but a down and dirty Guerrilla Marketer knows it for what it really is — spying.

There are two basic schools of marketing. There’s Lemming marketing, which encourages you to follow the herd, to do exactly what everyone else is doing, even if that means leaping off a financial cliff to certain doom.

And then there’s Guerrilla Marketing.

Guerrilla Marketing demands that you put away your checkbook and instead use less costly resources, relying primarily on time, energy, and your imagination as your best and most effective marketing tools.

Know Your Enemy

Before you can launch an effective Guerrilla Marketing campaign you need to know as much about your competitors as possible. You need to appreciate their strengths and, just as importantly, you need to admit and acknowledge your own weaknesses in comparison. And then you need to do something about it.

Guerrilla Marketers don’t mince words. The way to evaluate your competition, the way to dissect their inner workings and expose their weaknesses is to spy on them, plain and simple. There are five very simple and straightforward keys that will allow you to lay your competition bare-naked on a slab in front of you for you to pull apart and examine at your leisure.

But before you do that, it is absolutely vital that you set aside your ego and that you are brutally honest not only about your competitor but also about yourself, your organization and your product. If you can’t be totally — and we mean totally — objective then find someone else who can be, someone with no emotional ties to you or to your business.

The 5 Keys to Spying — Guerrilla Style

1. Order something. Start by ordering something… from yourself. See how fast and how easy it is to order something from your own website or to buy something at your own store. Evaluate every step involved. Now order something from your competitor. Is your competitor’s ordering system faster? Easier? Does it leave you feeling better about your order than your system does? Does your competitor offer a back-end product? If so, appropriate the strong points of your competitor’s system and make your system better, faster, and easier.

2. Make a visit. Again, start by making a visit to your own store or your own website. Look around. What is your very first impression? How easy it is to navigate through your store or website? How easy is it to find what you are looking for? Can you get knowledgeable and friendly help when you need it?

Now stop by your competitor’s store or website and ask all of the same questions. Look at the smallest of details, because it is often in the details that a sale is made or lost. Again, make note of anything that your competition does that you could copy and improve upon to make shopping on your website or at your store more enjoyable.

3. Phone your competition. How friendly, professional, and helpful is the person who answers your competitor’s phone? Is there anything you can learn from this that can be applied to the person answering your phone? Make sure the person who answers your phone smiles when they say “Hello!” A smile can be heard on the other end of the line, and it can set the entire tone of a conversation.

4. Request something to be delivered to you by mail. It doesn’t really matter what you ask for. Ask for a brochure or a pricelist, and then see how quickly your request is handled. Is there anything you can learn from your competitor’s ability to handle a simple request? Be honest and try your best to beat your competitor.

5. Compare everything. Again, it may serve you well to ask someone else to do this, someone with no emotional tie to you or to your business — someone who can be brutally honest. Compare everything about your competitor and yourself. Your competitor’s appearance vs. your appearance, the look and layout of your competitor’s store or website compared to yours. Compare your competitor’s service, pricing, packaging, the people they have working for them, their selection of goods and/or services, their follow-up, the look and layout of their signage, the quality of their merchandise, their delivery, their attitude, and just the way you feel after doing business with them as compared to the way you feel after doing business with your establishment.

As a true Guerrilla Marketer it is up to you to make an honest evaluation and then to beat your competition on every single point.

When you are persistent, you see a project through to the end or until you reach your goals. However, how do you react when you approach someone and they aren’t interested? Do you continue to pester them even when they are obviously not interested? This applies to clients, friends, family, doctors, therapists and other people you encounter when promoting your practice.

There are very few people who respond in a positive way when they are pestered and badgered and especially when you want them to buy a service or product. They may agree to a consultation to get rid of you, but they won’t work with you on a long term basis. These are the kind of people who give you a wrong phone number or they call and cancel their appointment. Will they make an effort to help promote your practice? Or will they make an effort to avoid you? It’s likely they will avoid you and not refer their friends to your practice.

You can get good results without being a pain. Be enthusiastic and persistent, but there are times when you need to take ‘no’ for an answer. Make the rejection positive by asking if there are specific reasons why they aren’t interested. Use these comments to improve your approach or your practice promotion. Any time someone turns you down you can learn something about how to improve your approach, your technique and your promotion.

Keep An Open Mind in Your Promotion

We never know where the best promotional ideas will originate. When people approach you about an idea, give them a chance to share their thoughts and suggestions. This is a time when you need to keep an open mind. Consider the idea and decide if the suggestion is useful for you. If you don’t understand the idea, ask questions and get some additional details. Many of these ideas are sketchy or will have limited details. But often suggestions can give you ideas to use, or they may spark new thoughts and ideas.

The simple answer is to give people a chance to share their ideas. If the thoughts are useless, then toss them out. Very few suggestions turn into wonderful ideas, but you will never find the golden nuggets if you don’t open your mind.

Market share or level of competition means the ratio of your brand sales versus the total market sales. While companies would naturally define its target competitors, it is actually the consumers who ultimately decide the competitive frame, or the list related products or services that consumers consider when exercising their purchasing power. We must therefore choose the market segment where we can have a potential leadership or at least a strong challenger role. Because the overriding objective of getting into this business is not just to satisfy the needs and wants of our customers but to do so profitably better than his competition. Coming to the last phase of the process is analyzing and evaluating all the information that has been collected. We have to look at all of the data we have collected on demand, competition, and advertising, and make decision as how they all balance out.

Clothing labels are an important tool used to ensure that the clothing sold meets standards in the United States, as well as other countries.

Labels are usually made out of satin coated acetate which has a shiny finish and is flexible and durable. Other printed clothing labels are made out of similar materials to the clothing itself and include cotton, polyester, and nylon.

Labels woven into the clothing are often made out of the fabrics taffeta, satin, and damask. These are normally shaped like rectangles and are commonly either 1 inch by 2 inches or 1/2 inch by 1 inch.

Many different sizes and shapes of clothing labels are sold, and normally the size of label used is dependent on the size of the final product used. A new product label will be required if you are combining several pieces of fabric to make one overall piece of clothing.

So if you have one piece of fabric that requires cold water, or a piece of fabric that cannot be put in a washing machine without damaging it, the entire piece of clothing should be labeled dry cleaning only.

In the game of chess, the term checkmate, according to MS Encarta means:

1) winning chess position: in chess, a condition or position in which a player’s king cannot escape check and the other player wins the game.
2) Chess move that ends game: in chess, a move that produces checkmate, or a game that ends in checkmate.
3) Complete defeat: a situation of defeat or deadlock.

As used in this article the analogy of the game of chess is meant to convey two different ideas: A) the idea that the government, and the government contract you are competing for, is the king. You and your competitors are in a real life game to win the contract. A checkmate is a complete defeat of your competitors; and B) the word “mate” is commonly used to refer to a skilled person’s worker, friend, as a term to address somebody. The idea is if you want to win the government contract it is wise to check (mate) and recheck (mate) the government specifications, and last but not least, have the financing in place pay for the labor and material required to deliver the product or services required.

Here is a real life example: The owner of a factory manufactured plastic and cloth protection cups for construction workers that were designed to protect elbows and knees from harm. The Federal Government announced a Request for Proposals for the manufacture of protective elbow pads and knee pads for the armed forces that were very similar to the owner’s product. With minor modifications to the design specifications for the pads the factory was capable of making the military products.

There were two major problems. The quantity of pads required to meet the performance specifications would require the factory to triple production and run three shifts twenty four hours a day. Since the government would not pay for the product for 30 to 60 days after receipt and inspection, how could the owner have sufficient cash flow to pay for labor and materials immediately at a level three times above the current cash flow?

The solution was to factor the government receivables to a commercial finance company. Pursuant to the Assignment of Claims Act of 1986 companies can have access to unlimited capital by selling individual invoices based on the credit of the U.S. government. Factoring government invoices allowed the company to be paid in days rather than to wait months. The contract to factor government receivables to a commercial finance company helps your company win a government Request for Proposal because it substantiates the functional specification that the work will be performed on a timely basis. In other words, a commercial financing contract helps to prove that the manufacturer has the financial wherewithal to perform on a timely basis. This is the financial part of how to checkmate your competitors.

A typical finance company contract should state: ABC finance company agrees to purchase obligations of which are of the United States of America, including without limitation the General Services Administration, the Departments of Education, and the Obligor: is (a) the United States of America or an executive, legislative, judicial, regulatory or administrative agency, authority or instrumentality, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, and Transportation, or (b) a State, or (c) local government entity.

Here are a few tips on how to check “mate” and make sure you get paid after you have won the contract. Pay close attention to administrative and billing instructions. Always submit your invoice to the stated paying government office and invoice promptly. If there are modifications, work with the commercial finance company for funding increases if necessary or if there are changes in payment instructions. Keep a log of all communications. Maintain complete records of the entire project. Use the governments order number for tracking for all parties, your company, the finance company and the ordering government agency. Be aware that the US government fiscal year is from October 1st through the end of September.

The bottom line: if you want your business to grow exponentially and win in he game of government contracting it may be wise to factor government receivables to checkmate your competition.
